Sounding Science: Listening for Coastal Futures Opening Reception and Exhibition (Sept. 21 - Dec. 21)

Sounding Science Opening Reception
Cost: FREE

Have you ever really listened to: Oysters talk? Sea grasses grow? Tides ebb and flow?

Join composers, scientists and scholars for a unique exhibition featuring thought-provoking and sometimes dissonant eco-acoustic compositions.

In collaboration with UVA’s Coastal Research Center and its Environmental Resilience Institute, the Coastal Futures Conservatory will bring a Sound Art Exhibition to the Barrier Islands Center featuring collaborations between musicians and scientists. The exhibition concentrates on work emerging from scientific research on oyster reefs, sea level rise, and seagrass restoration along the Eastern Shore. The compositions will come directly from the living worlds of the barrier island ecosystem as well as from sonification of data (water quality sampling and daily tide changes).

The Conservatory is a UVA initiative integrating art and humanities into the investigation of coastal change. Compositions deriving from the Eastern Shore will be exhibited alongside work from other changing coasts, including the coral reefs of Australia and ice lagoons of the Arctic.  For more information, please visit coastalconservatory.org.

Light Hors d’Oeuvres and Beverages will be served (catered by Jason Van Marter of The Local, Cheriton)

Cost: FREE

Note: The exhibition will be at the BIC from September 21st through December 21st.
