Participants will learn the basics of carving while making a traditional Black-bellied Plover shorebird decoy. PG uses traditional tools and techniques based on characteristics of live birds, and is strongly influenced by both past and modern carvers who fashion birds in the gunning tradition. Class is open to children and adults.

Dogs on the Farm - Basic Obedience (choose session)

Learn the fundamentals of companion obedience and how to communicate with your best friend.  Your dog will learn mouth manners (take it, leave it, get it, drop it), control behaviors (sit, down, stay) and safety behaviors (wait, recall).  We'll also work on polite leash walking and more, and add games and tricks to keep your dog engaged and learning.  No pre-requisite.  This is where your dog's education starts!

BIC’s Twisted Christmas Fun!

Join author Andrew Barbour at 1:30 pm as he reads the BIC holiday favorite about an orphan, a very twisted chimney, and those wily Hog Island sheep. Karyn Belknap of Ten Good Sheep will do a wool spinning demonstration on a traditional wheel.

Then at 2 pm, children (ages 4-12) will decorate their own yummy house and twisted chimney- and make a sheep ornament. Ho, Ho, Baaa! What a fun way to ring in the holidays!

Carving Class with PG Ross (for Children and Adults)

Saturday, November 11 1:00-4:00 p.m. AND Sunday, November 12 1:00-3:00 p.m.

Class open to both children and adults (maximum 10 students). Cost: $100 per person

Participants will make a traditional style "robin snipe" (aka red knot) shorebird decoy. Ross will share stories of duck hunting and good old common sense wisdom while learning the basics of carving. Ross grew up gunning waterfowl on marshes and waters on the Eastern Shore. Using and admiring handmade wooden decoys inspired him to start whittling in his mid-teens. Today, he makes decoys using traditional tools and techniques that are based on characteristics of live birds. However, their form has been strongly influenced by both past and modern carvers who fashion birds in the gunning tradition.

Parent/Child Decoy Carving Class

Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 5-6 from 3:00-5:00 p.m. AND Wednesday, Dec. 9 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Cost: $90 per participant. Class size limited to 12 people. Students MUST register and pay at least 7 days in advance. 

What could be more fun than carving a bird? How about sharing the experience with your child or parent? Parents (or grandparents) and their child can learn and practice the technique of carving together under the guidance of P.G. Ross. Each person will make a cork canvasback (choice of drake or hen) and finish the class with a pair of canvasbacks, one made by the parent and one by the child.  NOTE: the class is open to individuals as well as child/parent combos.
